Human Resources Degree Program at Marquette University

The Human Resources program at Marquette University is designed to prepare students for successful careers helping organizations leverage their most valuable asset: people. Recognizing that talented individuals are essential for the success of any organization, the program focuses on developing professionals skilled in acquiring, developing, and maintaining the talent needed to execute strategy and achieve results.

A hallmark of Marquette’s approach is the dual concern for helping both organizations and people succeed, embodying the principle of “Cura Personalis” (caring for the whole person). Graduates are prepared to be sought-after professionals ready to tackle people-related issues and make a difference in the world, trained for roles such as talent manager, change agent, employee champion, and strategic partner in high-demand careers.

The program emphasizes a hands-on, experiential learning approach, where students learn HR management by designing, developing, and implementing HR management systems. Opportunities for gaining leadership and professional experience abound through internships, networking events, and active participation in the Human Resources Management Organization student group, which plans professional and social activities.

Leveraging its urban location, the program provides extensive connections with the business community. Students learn directly from business leaders who serve as guest speakers, executive co-teachers, and professional mentors.

A significant advantage of the Marquette HR program is its curriculum’s alignment with and recognition by The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). This alignment allows students to become eligible to sit for the highly sought-after SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exam immediately upon graduation, which typically requires an additional two years of work and study.

Learning outcomes include synthesizing workforce management techniques, establishing learning and development programs, analyzing reward systems, aligning HR and business strategy, promoting inclusive work environments, developing relationship management skills, and examining personal bias.

In addition to the undergraduate major, the College of Business Administration also offers a special five-year program enabling students to earn an undergraduate degree in human resources and a Master of Science in Management. For information on the five-year program, contact the Graduate School of Management at mba@marquette.edu.
