Human Resources Degree Program at Utah Valley University

The Human Resource Management (HRM) program at Utah Valley University’s (UVU) Woodbury School of Business aims to help students gain a competitive advantage in the job market through the practical acquisition of knowledge, skills, and professional connections in the HR field. The program is designed to make graduates indispensable to any business, preparing them to help build careers, companies, and communities within the growing HR profession.

UVU’s HRM program emphasizes a commitment to Engaged Learning, featuring no textbooks and significant involvement in Student Consulting Projects with real companies such as 1-800-CONTACTS, Sundance Resort, doTerra, ebay, and Zions Bank. Students learn from top teaching faculty in Utah and build relationships with HR professionals across various industries.

Key learning outcomes include the ability to strategically champion the role of HRM, comprehend major legal theories and policies, design and implement core HR functions (job design, recruitment, selection, retention, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, HRIS, people analytics), and effectively respond to organizational opportunities through analytical thinking, problem-solving, ethical awareness, communication, and teamwork. The program provides hands-on experience in its Human Resources Information Systems course using SAP Success Factors, the same technology used by many large companies globally.

The program prepares students for professional certifications. It offers preparation for the aPHR Certification Program and provides the opportunity to pursue HRCI Certification Upon Graduation. Students are mentored by faculty like Rod Lacey, founder of Sunstone HR Consulting, known for extensive industry experience and an exceptionally high HRCI student pass rate. Information regarding preparation for certification exams in specific states or territories is available on the UVU Professional Licensure website.

Graduates qualify for many professional positions, including Human Resource Assistant, Generalist, & Manager, Recruiter, Knowledge Management Specialist, Performance Consultant, Compensation & Benefits Analyst, Payroll Specialist, Wellness Consultant, Occupational Health Coordinator, Employee Engagement Consultant, Instructional Designer, and Training & Development Manager. The specialized management degree is designed to differentiate graduates and enable them to impact company performance, productivity, and the bottom line.
