Human Resources Degree Program at Bowie State University
The Master of Arts in Human Resource Development (HRD) program at Bowie State University offers a comprehensive approach to professional development, going beyond traditional personnel management to focus on leadership, management, and inspiring others. This program is designed to strengthen skills that propel individuals and organizations forward, preparing graduates to drive performance and innovation across various industries.
The curriculum strategically combines behavioral sciences, management principles, and adult learning theories through interactive courses. Students develop critical thinking abilities and learn to evaluate and resolve real-world business issues, identify performance gaps, improve productivity, foster innovation, manage organizational change, and create effective human capital development programs.
In addition to the master’s degree, the program also offers a Certificate in Project Management, providing further specialization for students aiming to function as project managers.
To earn the M.A. degree, students must successfully complete a total of 39 credit hours, comprising ten (10) core courses and three (3) electives. A comprehensive exam is also required. The program allows students to transfer up to six credit hours (two graduate courses) with a grade of B or better from other accredited graduate programs, subject to program coordinator approval and institutional accreditation standards recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Admission requirements include holding a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants with a GPA between 2.5 – 2.75 may be considered for conditional admission, which is removed upon achieving a 3.0 GPA after completing the first nine graduate credit hours. An appeal process is available for applicants with extensive professional experience whose GPA does not meet the standard.
An off-site degree option for the HRD program is available at the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland.
