Human Resources Degree Program at University of Maryland Global Campus

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) offers an online Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management designed to build leadership skills and help students advance in nearly any industry. This 120-credit program focuses on core HR functions, human behavior, employee relations, and complexities ranging from recruitment and performance assessment to employment law, HR information systems, and diversity and inclusion.

The program requires 36 Required Major Credits, 41 General Education Credits, and 43 Minor and Elective Credits. Required major courses include Human Resource Management (HRMN 300), Labor Relations (HRMN 362), Employment Law for Business (HRMN 408), and a capstone (HRMN 495), among others.

With courses available fully online and multiple start dates, the program offers significant flexibility. Tuition rates are $330 per credit (in-state), $499 per credit (out-of-state), and a reduced rate of $250 per credit for military servicemembers, spouses, and dependents. Other fees may apply, but UMGC helps manage costs with no-cost digital materials in place of most textbooks.

UMGC is recognized as an approved education partner with SHRM and the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). The curriculum is designed to help prepare students for industry certification exams like the PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, and SHRM-SCP. Students may also earn up to 9 credits for holding eligible SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certifications obtained on or after January 1, 2017. Learning incorporates creative tools such as HR technology simulators and real-world case studies, with instructors assigning projects based on real-world skills.

Students can transfer up to 90 credits, including potential credit for military education, prior learning, or industry certifications. Graduates are prepared for roles such as HR managers, talent acquisition specialists, compensation analysts, or training coordinators. Access to lifetime career services is available, and students can join the UMGC Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management for networking opportunities. An accelerated pathway may allow students to reduce coursework for a master’s degree in Management with an HR concentration by up to 6 credits.
