Human Resources Degree Program at University of the Incarnate Word

The Bachelor of Arts in Human Resources program at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is designed to prepare students for the challenges of managing and developing people in the workplace. The program focuses on equipping individuals for careers in human resources, as well as enhancing their ability to solve problems, improve processes, and increase organizational effectiveness.

A key highlight is the program’s acknowledgment by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for its full alignment with SHRM’s HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. This alignment is significant as it means students enrolled in their final year may be eligible to sit for the SHRM-CP exam, provided they meet additional criteria such as accumulating at least 500 hours of relevant internship or practical HR experience and being in good standing with the university. UIW’s School of Professional Studies also offers separate SHRM Essentials and SHRM Exam Prep courses.

The Bachelor of Arts degree requires the completion of 120 total credit hours. This includes 46 hours for the UIW Core Curriculum, 21 hours in Business Curriculum courses such as ACC 2311 Financial Accounting, BIS 2325 Business Information Processing, MGT 3340 Concepts and Functions of Management, and various Management Science courses. The Major Curriculum comprises 24 hours focusing on core HR areas like HRES 3330 Human Resources and Law, HRES 3350 Staffing, HRES 3360 Training and Development, HRES 3370 Compensation and Benefits, HRES 3380 Performance Management, and culminates in HRES 4380 Capstone in Human Resources. Additionally, students take courses in Organizational Development and Leadership. Elective hours are taken as needed to reach the 120-hour total.

For those interested in a shorter program, a Minor in Human Resources is also available, requiring 18 hours of coursework, including Organizational Development and Leadership, and 12 hours chosen from key Human Resources courses.
