Human Resources Degree Program at Sam Houston State University

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Human Resource Management at Sam Houston State University is designed to prepare students for professional roles managing an organization’s human resources. The program places a strong emphasis on maximizing the value of human capital within organizations. The curriculum examines core HRM practices, including recruitment & selection, training & development, compensation & benefits, and performance management.

A key feature of the BBA in HRM program is its curriculum’s full alignment with the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in various professional development opportunities throughout their time at SHSU. These valuable experiences help hone both hard and soft skills and include participation in the student SHRM chapter leadership, travel to conferences (local, state, regional, national), case competitions, networking sessions with guest speakers, community engagement projects, study abroad options, and internships.

To remain in good academic standing, students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in their SHSU, cumulative, and business grade point averages. Additionally, they must earn a “C” or better in all management courses and the HR law class. Students should note that at least 50% of the required business curriculum for the BBA degree must be taken in residence at Sam Houston State University; this requirement can be met through courses taken at The Woodlands Center campus or through SHSU Online.

Graduates of the program are prepared for various careers in human resource management, such as roles in Selection, Recruitment, Orientation, Retention, Benefits, Compensation, Payroll, Regulatory Compliance, Occupational Safety, and Equal Employment Opportunity. The degree also provides a solid foundation for students wishing to continue their education with a graduate degree.

The B.B.A. degree requires 120 Credit Hours and offers enrollment in Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Information regarding tuition and costs can be found under Rates Per Semester. Specific application deadlines are August 1 for Fall, December 15 for Spring, and May 15 for Summer enrollment.
