Human Resources Degree Program at University of Illinois Springfield

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) offers a Master’s in Human Resource Management (MSHRM) program designed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills in the HR field. The program requires completion of 30 total credit hours, comprising 15 core credit hours and 15 elective credit hours. To graduate, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in all core and elective coursework.

The curriculum focuses on developing expertise in key areas such as employment law, staffing, performance management, and compensation. Students learn to articulate the strategic role of HR and labor relations, analyze global HR issues, and develop proficiency in HR data analytics and information systems. Professional writing and communication skills specific to HR functions like staffing, training, and negotiation are also emphasized.

Core courses include Acquiring and Developing Talent (MGT 531), Performance Management (MGT 532), Human Resource Analytics (MGT 536), Strategic Human Resource Management Closure (MGT 538), and Fundamentals of Human Resource Management (MGT 551). MGT 538 serves as the required graduate closure course and must be completed at UIS with a grade of B (3.0) or better. Elective options allow students to tailor their studies, including courses like International Human Resource Management, Managing Compensation and Benefits, and HRM Information Systems, chosen from a list of 500-level courses.

A significant feature of the program is the availability of a fully online format for both the Master’s degree and the Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management. This online option provides access to dynamic, interactive learning communities using the latest technologies, with no on-campus visits required. The online curriculum mirrors the on-campus version.

Admission requires meeting general UIS criteria. For the MSHRM, BUS 521 is a prerequisite course that must be completed before or during the first semester of core coursework. Conditional admission is possible for the Master’s program. For the Graduate Certificate, admission is based on department faculty evaluation of the applicant’s complete file, also requiring general UIS criteria.

New students are required to contact the department office for initial advising, and all students are strongly encouraged to consult an academic advisor before enrolling in coursework for any academic term.

For more detailed information, prospective students can visit the program website at www.uis.edu/mmo/, email mmo@uis.edu, or call (217) 206-6712. The department office is located at UHB 4060.
