Human Resources Degree Program at Claremont Graduate University
The Master of Science (MS) in Human Resource Management (HRM) at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is a distinctive and flexible program tailored for both recent graduates and experienced full-time working professionals. The program aims to equip students to enhance their careers as strategic organizational partners.
Students learn how business issues, social, regulatory, and technical changes impact HR requirements and costs. The curriculum emphasizes applying best HR management practices to cultivate an attractive organizational culture that supports thriving employees and flourishing organizations. Graduates gain crucial analytical skills and design tools necessary to identify human resources management issues and develop strategic solutions.
The program is structured to accommodate busy professionals, offered throughout the academic year with semesters divided into two eight-week modules. Courses are conveniently scheduled for evenings and weekends.
The MSHRM is typically a 2-year program, requiring 36 or 40 units depending on prior experience. Students with more than 5 years of relevant HR work experience may be exempt from the 4-unit prerequisite course, HRM 300 – Principles of Human Resource Management. The curriculum consists of a 4-unit prerequisite (if needed), 32 core units, and 4 elective units.
Core courses cover a wide range of topics including Organizational Behavior, Job Analysis/Design, Analytics/Metrics/Measurement, Training & Development, Workforce Planning/Talent Management, Organizational Development & Change, Staffing, Global HR & Diversity, Employee & Labor Relations, Compensation/Benefits, Performance Management, Ethical Issues, Consulting, and Legal Issues. The program culminates in a 2-unit Capstone course, HRM 329 – HR Strategic Planning.
Elective requirements can be fulfilled through non-core HRM courses, approved courses from the Psychology Department or Drucker Business School, transfer units from previous graduate work, or an approved internship or independent study.
Students have the option to add an 8-unit Concentration in Positive Human Resource Development, with 4 units potentially counting towards their MSHRM electives. This concentration can be completed within the standard 2-year timeframe, requiring 40 or 44 total units.
Admissions requirements are detailed in the Admissions section of the current Policies and General Information Bulletin. University policies, including the requirement to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for Satisfactory Academic Progress, apply to students in the program.
